2. Modernity and the Problem of Progress
Understanding postmodernism requires understanding what it was reacting against.
Modernity placed enormous faith in human capacity to understand and transform the world. The scientific revolution, Enlightenment, industrialization and technological development created a powerful narrative:
knowledge → technology → economic development → progress → improved human life
This narrative produced extraordinary achievements. Modern medicine, sanitation, electricity, telecommunications, transportation and industrial production have transformed human existence.

Consequently, postmodernism asks whether the same rational and technological systems that produce enormous benefits can also produce enormous risks.

"Can humanity control nature?"
It becomes:
"What happens when humanity's attempt to control nature produces consequences it cannot control?"
That question is central to the environmental crisis.
3. Postmodernism and the Green Transition
The green transition is fascinating because it contains both a strongly modernist project and a postmodern critique of modernity.
On one level, the green transition is deeply modernist.
Climate science identifies measurable physical processes. Engineers develop renewable-energy systems, batteries, electric vehicles, heat pumps and smart grids. Governments establish targets and regulations. Economists develop carbon-pricing mechanisms.
The basic logic is:
scientific knowledge → technological innovation → institutional action → decarbonization → sustainable future
This is recognizably modernist.
It assumes that humanity can understand a complex problem and deliberately reorganize its technological infrastructure to address it.
But the green transition simultaneously challenges the assumptions of industrial modernity.
Modern economic development has historically depended heavily on increasing energy consumption, resource extraction, industrial production and material throughput. The environmental crisis raises a difficult question:
Can the civilization created by industrial modernity continue indefinitely without exceeding planetary limits?
The green transition therefore isn't simply an attempt to replace coal with solar panels. It potentially requires reconsidering transportation, food systems, cities, consumption, land use, manufacturing, finance and patterns of economic development.
This is where postmodernism becomes relevant.
A postmodern analysis asks:
What does "green" actually mean?
Who decides whether a technology is sustainable?
Who benefits from the transition?
Who pays for it?
Whose definition of progress is being implemented?
Consider electric vehicles. They can substantially reduce direct fossil-fuel consumption, particularly when electricity generation becomes cleaner. Yet a postmodern analysis would also examine mineral extraction, battery production, global supply chains, urban design, automobile dependence and inequalities in access.
The question isn't necessarily whether electric vehicles are "good" or "bad."
It is:
What larger system are we reproducing through the technology?

4. Green Growth and the Postmodern Challenge

Green growth proposes that technological innovation can allow economies to continue developing while dramatically reducing environmental impacts.
This is an optimistic modernist proposition:

Why should economic growth remain the central measure of progress?
Can material consumption be separated sufficiently from environmental degradation?
Who benefits from economic growth?
What does a "good life" mean if material abundance comes at the cost of ecological stability?
This is where ideas such as degrowth, post-growth, sufficiency, circular economy and ecological economics become important.
The underlying debate is no longer purely technological.
It becomes a debate about civilization's values.
5. The Green Transition as a Civilizational Project
The deeper the green transition goes, the less it resembles a conventional engineering project.
At one level:
Can we build enough renewable energy?
At another:
Can we transform the energy system?
Then:
Can we transform economic incentives and institutions?
And eventually:
Can societies change their expectations about consumption, mobility, prosperity and the good life?
This final level is much closer to a cultural transformation.
The transition therefore potentially moves through several layers:
Technology → Infrastructure → Institutions → Economics → Culture → Values
At the cultural level, the problem becomes significantly more complicated because there is no universally agreed destination.
Different societies—and different individuals within the same society—can have radically different ideas about what a sustainable future should look like.
This leads directly to the concept of a civilizational frontier.
6. The Civilizational Frontier: Consciousness Shift

Humanity already possesses extraordinary technological capabilities. What it lacks is comparable capacity for coordinated transformation of values, institutions and collective behavior.
The knowledge gap is also enormous.
We still have incomplete understanding of:
individual consciousness
collective psychology
cultural evolution
value formation
institutional transformation
long-term cooperation
civilization-scale coordination
the relationship between technology and human identity
Consequently, a GEII of 97 can be interpreted not simply as saying:
"This requires enormous technological effort."
It can mean:
"This requires enormous effort because we do not fully understand what we are trying to transform, nor do we agree on what the transformation should produce."
That is a profoundly different type of frontier.
8. GEII as a Modernist Tool Applied to a Postmodern Problem

Humanity needs a consciousness shift.
Postmodernism would immediately ask:
Whose consciousness? Toward what? And who decided that the new consciousness is superior?
This matters because the idea of a "higher consciousness" can itself become a grand narrative.
If someone declares:
"Humanity must evolve toward this specific spiritual worldview."
they have created precisely the kind of universal narrative that postmodernism tends to distrust.
A genuinely postmodern interpretation would therefore emphasize plurality.
Humanity may not need one universal consciousness.
Perhaps it needs the ability to coordinate among different worldviews without requiring everyone to adopt the same worldview.
That is a subtler and potentially more realistic civilizational objective.
10. Beyond Postmodernism: Toward a New Synthesis
This is where concepts such as metamodernism become interesting.
A purely modernist position might say:
Science and rational planning can solve civilization's problems.
A purely postmodern position might respond:
Be skeptical of universal solutions, categories and narratives.
A metamodern position attempts to hold both ideas simultaneously:
We need evidence, science, institutions and measurable goals—but we must remain conscious of uncertainty, pluralism, power and the limitations of our own narratives.
Applied to your GEII framework, that could mean:
Measure the problem.
Acknowledge uncertainty.
Identify competing values.
Recognize power relationships.
Avoid pretending that one civilization-wide vision is unquestionably correct.
Nevertheless, act.
That final point is crucial.
Postmodern skepticism becomes useless if it prevents action. Modernist confidence becomes dangerous if it prevents reflection.
A civilizational transition probably requires both capacities.
Conclusion
Postmodernism is ultimately a challenge to unquestioned certainty. It asks humanity to examine the narratives through which it understands truth, progress, identity, development and civilization.
The green transition demonstrates why this matters. It is simultaneously a technological modernization project and a profound challenge to the assumptions of industrial modernity. It asks not only how we can decarbonize civilization, but whether our definitions of prosperity, consumption and progress need to change.
The "Civilizational → Consciousness Shift" pushes the question even further. At GEII 97, the frontier is no longer primarily about building a machine or discovering a scientific principle. It becomes a problem of collective meaning, coordination, knowledge, values and cultural transformation.
This produces an intriguing paradox:
GEII is a modernist attempt to measure the difficulty of a postmodern problem.
And perhaps that is precisely its greatest philosophical value.
The ultimate frontier may not be reaching another planet, but developing a civilization capable of deciding—collectively and consciously—what kind of civilization it wants to become.
