Maize is one of the world’s biggest crops—but a large share takes a detour through livestock before becoming food.

The result is a conversion bottleneck: lots of calories in, far fewer edible calories out.

1–2) Scale and where maize goes

Global output: ~1.22–1.26 billion tonnes of maize per year.

Major destination: ~54–63% is used as animal feed rather than eaten directly.

That shift supports livestock production—but it also sets up the efficiency loss that follows.

3) The conversion bottleneck (feed → food)

The “loss” is biological conversion. Animals use most feed energy to live (heat, movement, metabolism, waste), so only a fraction returns as edible food.

  • Rule of thumb: only ~7–12% of feed calories return as edible animal products.
  • What the gap means: most crop calories are “spent” before they reach a human plate.

4) A more direct food system would recover more human nutrition

A more plant-forward system wouldn’t mean “eating only corn.” Feed corn is often field corn, and food systems rely on many staples.

But it would mean more land and harvests aimed at foods people can eat more directly—shifting calories from a conversion step into human diets.

Key idea: Fewer detours through animals can translate into more usable nutrition from the same agricultural base.


5) Two chains, two outcomes

  • Conversion-heavy chain: crops → feed → animals → fewer edible calories returned.
  • Shorter food chain: crops → people (via staples and ingredients) → more calories available for diets.

Bottom line: the cost isn’t that corn becomes worthless—it’s that much of its food potential is used up before it reaches a human plate.
