Introduction: The Guardian of Zagreb
Medvednica is not merely a mountain; it is the lungs of a capital city and a cultural monument. To hike it over three days is to witness the transition from the Austro-Hungarian elegance of downtown Zagreb to the rugged limestone ridges of the summit, ending in the rolling thermal hills of the Zagorje region. This route covers approximately 60 kilometers, offering a vertical odyssey that tests the legs and rewards the soul.
Day 1: The Ascent of the Southern Slopes
Route: Tuškanac → Gračansko Dolje → Sljeme (15 km)
Vegetarian nutrition isn’t about restriction — it’s about discovering how diverse, powerful, and complete plant-based food can be.
The journey begins in the heart of the city. Starting at Tuškanac, hikers traverse the "Green Horseshoe" of Zagreb before reaching the foothills at Gračansko Dolje. The ascent follows the historic Leustek trail, a winding path designed for gradual elevation. As the city noise fades, the beech and oak forests take over. Reaching the Sljeme summit (1033m), hikers are greeted by the iconic television tower and the smell of grah s kobasicom (bean soup with sausage) wafting from mountain huts like Puntijarka.
Day 2: Into the Zagorje Heartlands
Route: Sljeme → Stubičke Toplice → Kraljev Vrh (25 km)
Day two is a study in contrasts. Leaving the peak, the trail plunges down the northern face. This side of the mountain is steeper, wetter, and more secluded. The destination is Stubičke Toplice, a town famous for its thermal waters since Roman times. After a dip in the medicinal pools, the trail turns west toward Kraljev Vrh. This section is less frequented by tourists, offering a peaceful trek through the vineyards and orchards of the Hrvatsko Zagorje countryside.
Day 3: The Long Return
Route: Kraljev Vrh → Tuškanac (25 km)
The final leg is the most demanding. Hikers must climb back toward the Medvednica ridge, often passing through the "Stone Gate" area of the mountain. The return journey typically passes the medieval fortress of Medvedgrad, perched on a hill overlooking Zagreb like a silent sentinel. The final descent into Tuškanac brings the traveler full circle, arriving back at the urban center with a profound new perspective on the skyline they left behind 48 hours prior.
