The Trojan Horse, the Dark Horse, and the Fear of Losing Control — From Ancient Greek Deception to Cybersecurity, Migration, and Crime
Why the ancient story still resonates in an age of migration and digital threats — and why the real question is not who enters the gate, but whether a society can distinguish openness from exploitation.

There is an important distinction between using the Trojan horse as a metaphor for migration and claiming that migrants themselves are a Trojan horse. The first can be a political or cultural metaphor; the second risks turning an entire population into a security threat without evidence.
The Trojan Horse in Greek mythology
In Greek mythology, the Trojan Horse was a deceptive strategy used by the Greeks during the Trojan War. After a long siege, the Greeks apparently sailed away, leaving behind a huge wooden horse as a supposed offering to the gods.
The Trojans brought the horse inside their fortified city. Hidden inside it were Greek warriors. During the night, they emerged, opened the city gates, and allowed the Greek army to enter. Troy was subsequently destroyed.
The essential concept is therefore:
something apparently harmless or desirable is accepted inside a protected system, while its hidden contents create the real danger.
That is why "Trojan horse" became such a powerful metaphor long after antiquity.
Why it resembles the computer concept
The connection to computing is remarkably close.
A Trojan horse / Trojan in cybersecurity is malicious software that disguises itself as something legitimate. The user voluntarily installs or executes it, after which the hidden malicious component can perform unwanted actions.
The parallel is:

So the metaphor isn't simply "enemy comes inside." Its more precise meaning is deception + legitimate-looking entry + hidden threat + exploitation from within.
Where migration enters the metaphor
This is where the subject becomes politically sensitive.
A political argument might describe uncontrolled migration, infiltration by criminal networks, terrorism, human trafficking, or foreign intelligence operations using the Trojan-horse metaphor.
But migration itself is not equivalent to malware.
A migrant can be:
a refugee fleeing war,
an economic migrant,
a student,
a worker,
a family member,
or, in some cases, an individual involved in crime.
Those categories cannot responsibly be collapsed into one.
A more defensible formulation would therefore be:
The Trojan-horse metaphor describes a fear that legitimate migration or humanitarian openness could be exploited by people or organizations with hostile intentions.
That is considerably different from saying "migrants are Trojan horses."
And the "dark horse"?
The dark horse is a different metaphor.
Originally, a "dark horse" referred to an unexpected or previously obscure competitor who suddenly succeeds. In politics, it can mean an unlikely candidate who unexpectedly wins.
It does not inherently mean a criminal.
However, you can connect the two metaphors rhetorically:
Trojan horse → hidden threat
Dark horse → unknown or underestimated actor
Crime → the possibility that an unknown actor exploits weaknesses
That produces a broader political narrative about uncertainty and loss of control.
But there is another interesting distinction: dark horse is usually about unexpected success, whereas Trojan horse is about deception and concealed intent. Calling criminals "dark horses" therefore changes the traditional meaning of the expression.
The story is getting deeper
I think the strongest version of this idea is not really about migrants. It's about fear of losing control of a dominant society because its openness can be exploited by criminal or hostile actors.
The story would look something like this:
A powerful civilization becomes prosperous and open → it opens its gates → most newcomers are peaceful → a minority of hostile actors exploits the openness → crime, corruption, extremism, or foreign influence grows → society begins to fear that its own openness has become a vulnerability.
That is a much more interesting theme than simply "migration is dangerous."
And historically, this fear is hardly unique to modern Western societies. Civilizations have repeatedly worried about outsiders, infiltration, internal corruption, declining institutions, and the possibility that a powerful society might be undermined from within.
The crucial question is therefore not:
"Are migrants the Trojan horse?"
but:
"Can an open society protect itself from criminals and hostile actors without turning openness itself into the enemy?"
That gives you a much stronger connection to the computer analogy too: good cybersecurity doesn't mean deleting every file or refusing every connection. It means distinguishing legitimate activity from malicious activity and building systems capable of detecting and containing abuse.
And that may actually be the essence of this amazing story: the fear isn't ultimately about the horse. It's about what happens when a powerful civilization can no longer tell the difference between an open gate and an exploited gate.
