The 2026 FIFA World Cup Paid Off — But Who Pays the Carbon Bill? The Hidden Economics of Sport, Mobility and Climate Externalities
FIFA’s record-breaking revenues tell one story; billions of passenger-kilometres, aviation emissions and the unpriced environmental costs of a three-country mega-event tell another.
Financially, the 2026 FIFA World Cup appears to have paid off spectacularly for FIFA. But that does not mean it paid off equally for the host governments, taxpayers, or the planet.
The tournament ended on July 19, 2026, so we can now make a much better assessment.
💰 Did it pay off financially?
For FIFA: overwhelmingly yes.
FIFA had originally expected roughly $11 billion in revenue from the 2026 World Cup cycle, but by the end of the tournament Gianni Infantino was saying FIFA expected more than $15 billion in revenue for the 2023–26 cycle.
That's enormous.
FIFA also increased the money distributed to the 48 national associations to $871 million, including prize money and preparation/qualification payments.
So, from FIFA's perspective:
$15B+ revenue → roughly $0.87B distributed to participating associations → enormous commercial success.
But there's an important catch: FIFA's $15B figure is revenue, not profit. We don't yet have a final audited tournament profit figure. FIFA's operating budget for the tournament has been reported at around $2.7 billion, but revenue and profit shouldn't be confused.
🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽 What about the host countries?
This is much more complicated.
The host cities and governments spent public money on transportation, policing, security, infrastructure, stadium modifications and event organization. At the same time, they received tourism, hotel, restaurant, tax and employment benefits.
For example, New York/New Jersey reported $2.1 billion in economic impact from the first five matches alone, with $228 million in state and local tax revenue by then.
Canada had estimated beforehand that the tournament would generate C$3.8 billion in economic output, including C$2 billion in GDP and C$700 million in government revenue.
But economic impact ≠ net profit. A city can generate billions in economic activity while still having substantial public costs.
So I would characterize the financial result as:

🌍 And then there's the environmental bill
This is where the story becomes fascinating.
There isn't one universally accepted carbon-footprint number.
A recent Communications Sustainability study estimates the 48-team World Cup at about 4.23 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent. It calculates:
3.07 Mt — international travel
0.411 Mt — inter/intra-city travel
0.287 Mt — accommodation
0.191 Mt — temporary construction/facilities
0.078 Mt — food & beverages
other sources making up the remainder
In other words, travel alone accounts for about 82% of the footprint.
But another analysis by the New Weather Institute estimates approximately 9.02 million tonnes CO₂e — more than twice the academic estimate.
And Greenly estimates approximately 7.8 MtCO₂e.
Why such a huge difference?
Mostly methodology.
The biggest variable is how researchers calculate international air travel, what emissions are included, and whether infrastructure emissions are fully allocated to the tournament.
So I would responsibly describe the 2026 World Cup's direct climate footprint as roughly:
~4–9 million tonnes of CO₂e, depending on methodology.
That's a much better statement than pretending there is one precise number.
✈️ The real environmental problem: geography
And here's the structural problem with the 2026 tournament.
The World Cup wasn't simply a tournament in one relatively compact country.
It stretched across Canada, the United States and Mexico, with 16 host cities.
That creates an extraordinary amount of passenger movement.
The academic estimate finds about 3.48 million tonnes of the 4.23 Mt footprint came from travel.
So the environmental equation is almost paradoxical:
48 teams + 104 matches + 16 cities + millions of spectators
= spectacular global spectacle
but also
= enormous mobility requirement.
And aviation is particularly problematic because it produces emissions that are difficult to decarbonize quickly.
🌳 What about FIFA's sustainability measures?
FIFA isn't ignoring the issue.
For example, it promoted public transportation, plant-based food and waste sorting, and says the tournament supported planting 1 million trees across North America.
Those initiatives are useful.
But they shouldn't be confused with eliminating the tournament's footprint.
Planting trees ≠ preventing millions of tonnes of aviation emissions.
There is also a much bigger issue surrounding sponsorship.
A July 2026 analysis by the New Weather Institute estimated that sponsorship by four high-carbon companies — Aramco, Qatar Airways, American Airlines and Hyundai-Kia — could be associated with 42 million tonnes of additional CO₂e through increased sales.
That is a different category from the tournament's operational footprint, though, and shouldn't simply be added to the 4–9 Mt figure as if it were the same accounting boundary.
⚖️ So did the World Cup "pay off"?
I'd give three different answers:
Financially for FIFA: YES — spectacularly.
The tournament appears to have exceeded even FIFA's already enormous revenue expectations.
Economically for host societies: PROBABLY, but unevenly.
Some cities and sectors clearly benefited, but economic activity is not the same thing as a net public return.
Environmentally: NO.
The tournament generated a substantial climate footprint, overwhelmingly associated with transportation, especially international travel.
And that's perhaps the most interesting conclusion:
The 2026 World Cup demonstrated that a mega-event can be extraordinarily profitable while simultaneously imposing a substantial environmental cost that isn't fully reflected in its financial accounts.
That's the classic externality problem: FIFA can count dollars; the atmosphere doesn't send FIFA an invoice.
If we assign a social cost of carbon of $186 per tonne, the academic study estimates the climate damage from the 48-team tournament at about $787 million.
So even using the lower 4.23 Mt estimate, the environmental bill is hundreds of millions of dollars.
That's a very interesting angle for the “Stop the Drama. Quit sports.” / climate-activism style: “The World Cup paid its financial bills. Who paid the carbon bill?”
